Maybe the success of Lowry's work can be put down to the fact he saw colour in the northern streets he painted. Where others saw grey, the life Lowry saw is portrayed beautifully here by James Milroy.
Furthermore, Lowry was ignored as an artist for much of his life; the crowds pass him by as if to emphasise this. Only a woman and child are curious by his attendance.
